Boosting Confidence By Improving Composure
Dr. Patrick Cohn, golf psychology expert and author of the “Golfer’s Mental Edge” CD program and Breaking The Yips Cycle DVD program, teaches amateur to tour professional golfers how to improve their mental game of golf using golf psychology strategies developed over the last 20 years of his career.
If you hit some really bad shots and get upset, does your temper start to destroy the rest of your game or the rest of the round?
In this week’s golf psychology session, mental game of golf expert and author of The Mental Game of Golf, Dr. Cohn, responds to a question from Keith who says that his temper is really destroying his confidence.
Keith wrote in and said:
“I’ve been golfing for 50 years but I’ve gone from a solid 9 to scoring around 90. I hit some great shots but also some terrible ones including the occasional shank, but then I get so down on myself that my game goes to pieces. I can’t control my temper which destroys my confidence, there by resulting in a downward sprial. Is there some way I can learn to stay more positive and control my temper?”
COHN: Keith, great question… I work with this issue with juniors to college to pros to senior players. It’s critical to stay composed.
COHN: I wnt to start by sating look at your handicap, that means you’re going to make mistakes, you’re going to hit bad shots, maybe even the occasional shank. It just happens…
COHN: So, number 1 is you’re proably going out there with too high of expectations for your game.
