Tips for Overcoming Injury and Returning to the Course

Overcoming Fear to Return to Play

Have you recently sustained an injury and now don’t know how it’s going to affect your golf game?

In this week’s golf psychology session, mental game of golf expert and author of The Mental Game of Golf, Dr. Cohn, responds to a question from Dean who had this to say about his game:

“I recently sustained an injury to my right elbow that has sidelined me from playing golf. The pain is unbearable when I make contact with the ball. I don’t know how to swing properly now.  I’m a 6 handicap (before the injury) and patiently waiting for the doctor to give me his opinion on what steps we should take next. Do you have any thoughts on this, and do you have any knowledge or experience with this injury?”

COHN: Hi Dean, I don’t have any specific knowledge about your injury…I can only speak to the psychological side of injury rehab…

COHN: What you have to be aware of when it comes to the psychology of injury rehab, is athletes often have a lot of doubt about returning to their previous level of play…

COHN: Can I be a 6 handicap again once I come back from this injury? How will it feel? Will my injury hold up?

COHN: So often when you’re coming back you may be physically ready to play there alot of mental scars still remaining…

Listen to the podcast now to learn what Dr. Cohn has to say about overcoming injury and returning to play.
