What Should You Focus on During Your Swing?

In this week’s golf psychology session, mental game of golf expert and author of The Mental Game of Golf, Dr. Cohn, responds to a question from Andy who had this to say about his game:

“Ive been golfing for 50 years and I never felt comfortable with my wedge game. But after a lesson, my confidence boomed. I now have three things to think about, one on the back swing and two on the down swing.But recently I attended a golf seminar about simply picking a target and not having any swing thoughts. My questions is what if i was to just think about the target when hitting a wedge? What kind of a swing would that produce? Would it be my wedge swing Ive had for 50 years or the new swing I’ve only practiced for six months. I feel like I need to have all three of these points in my mind to make the move but I cant do that and think of a target as well. I’d be very interested in your thoughts…”

COHN: A lot of the gurus out there may tell you to let go of swing thoughts and just think about the target.

COHN: Now, in some cases that’s highly appropriate. You just don’t want to focus on the target and think that you are going to make the right move…
