How Does Mental Coaching for Golf Work?

Measuring Success Rates in Golf Mental Training

Dr. Patrick Cohn, golf psychology expert and author of the “Golfer’s Mental Edge” CD program and Breaking The Yips Cycle DVD program, teaches amateur to tour professional golfers how to improve their mental game of golf using golf psychology strategies developed over the last 20 years of his career.

Have you ever considered doing mental coaching but you’re unsure of whether it will help or not?

In this week’s golf psychology session, mental game of golf expert and author of The Mental Game of Golf, Dr. Cohn, responds to a question from Joe who wants to know:

What is the success rate that I have with doing mental coaching programs with golfers.

COHN: Interesting question… When someone often says, ‘What’s your cure rate or success rate?’ I know they really don’t understand what mental coaching is all about.

COHN: From my perspective, mental coaching is more about educating athletes about their thinking, about some of the mental blocks they have and about helping them improve their consistency both in their mental game and their physical game.

COHN: I really look at myself more as an educator than I do as a therapist, where I’m getting some type of success rate.

COHN: The ultimate goal for me is so that you can play in competition just as well as you do in a practice round.

COHN: most of the time if you are shooing 75, for example, in practice rounds and then 85 in competition, that’s an indication that your mental game is getting in the way, given the conditions, it was the same course and the conditions were the same.

COHN: So, I don’t offer success rates, period. We don’t keep track of that. I look to educate my students on how to improve their mental game by enhancing confidence, trust, focus and composure, these are the components.
